The 22nd Battalion

The 22nd Battalion

Once the war was over, the Royal 22e Régiment could finally come home! The Regiment officially retook possession of La Citadelle in August 1946. The postwar decade was crucial for its development. From 1945 to 1956, the Regiment grew from 1 to 6 battalions.

On the international scene, peace was short-lived. The new American and Soviet superpowers divided the world into two blocs or spheres of influence. It was the beginning of the Cold War, which lasted until the Soviet Union fell in 1990. In this context, for hundreds of members of the Regiment, Germany became a second home. Canadian soldiers were stationed there for 40 years, During this time they forged strong bonds among themselves and with the local population.

The Royal 22e Régiment took part in many military and peacekeeping operations in the latter half of the 20th century. The first major operation was in the Korean War in 1951. Involved in various missions, members of the 22e were also present in Kashmir, the Congo, Cyprus, Somalia, former Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Haiti and, more recently, in Afghanistan since 2004.

The 22e is definitely in action all around the world!
